We are pleased to announce the opening of an additional driver training school at our NEMF terminal in Pittsburgh, PA. The first class of eight graduates completed their training in early July. NEMF’s program consists of ten weeks of training broken down as follows / eight weeks of combined classroom and hands on instruction / during this time the driver trainee is guided by one of our professional Regional Driver / Safety Trainers. During week eight, the driver trainees will test and receive their Commercial Driver’s License. Once they receive their CDL, the driver trainee will be put out in the field for “On The Job” training with a senior NEMF driver/mentor for two additional weeks.
The program is designed to not only instruct the students on the materials necessary to pass the CDL test, but it is also geared toward creating a professional career minded truck driver. According to Tom Hartley, Director of Safety, “In my opinion, these driver training schools are the key to our future success. The NEMF Safety Department is committed to creating safe, conscientious and professional drivers. These well-educated and safe drivers are at the very core of our efforts as we work to meet our customers’ needs.”
This program also provides an opportunity for career growth and advancement to existing NEMF employees. Jose Hernandez was one of the students in the first class conducted at the new Pittsburgh training school. Jose emigrated from Cuba five years ago, and was a dedicated dockworker at the NEMF Syracuse, NY terminal for three years prior to entering the program. Jose enthusiastically completed the training curriculum and is now settling into his new role as a local pick-up and delivery driver back at the Syracuse terminal.
In addition to the new Pittsburgh location, NEMF also has training locations in Columbus, OH; Newburgh, NY; Meriden, CT and two schools in Harrisburg, PA. We are also currently exploring the possibility of an additional school in the Metro NY / NJ area. The first NEMF driver training schools were opened in 2004. All training locations are under the leadership of our Corporate Safety Department.
