NJ Transit Selects Shevell As Vice Chairman
NJ Transit Board Member Myron P. "Mike" Shevell has been elected vice chair of the public transit corporation's Board of Directors replacing former board member Amy M. Rosen.
Shevell, who has served on NJ Transit's Board since May, 1994, is chairman of the board and chief executive officer at New England Motor Freight (NEMF), Inc. of Elizabeth (NJ).
State Transportation Commissioner and NJ Transit Board Chairman James Weinstein said: "Mike's experience in the transportation industry and as a businessman have been invaluable to this Board. He has an extensive knowledge of what it takes to operate a successful business, having run a company of 3,500 employees and 30 terminals in 12 states, Puerto Rico and Canada that generate annual revenue of $225 million. Mike's experience will help us greatly as we strive to enhance rail and bus service for our customers throughout the state."
NJ Transit Acting Executive Director Stanley J. Rosenblum said: "Mike Shevell's expanded role on our Board will greatly enhance our efforts to provide quality, cost effective service for all of our customers. When Mr. Shevell purchased his trucking company nearly 22 years ago, it was at the brink of failure, He resurrected the company to become one of the country's foremost regional LTL (less-than-truckload) carriers, and he will bring that same drive and desire with him in all of his dealings with NJ Transit."
Shevell replaces former Board member Amy Rosen. Rosen, who also serves on the Amtrak Board of Directors, resigned from the NJ Transit Board in December 1998 because of a law that prohibits her from serving on the boards of both transit agencies.
Shevell, a lifelong New Jersey resident, has worked in the trucking industry for more than 40 years. Prior to acquiring NEMF in 1977, he was president and chief executive officer at Associated Transport, Inc. and Eastern Freight Ways, Inc. of Carlstadt. He serves as chairman of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association and is a regional director of the Bank of New York and a board member of Trump Palace.
